Skin can become sensitive to a number of environmental and external factors including pollen, dust mites and dander, and many beauty and personal hygiene products also contain certain chemicals that can also cause allergic reactions.
Cosmetic allergies are common, and many people experience symptoms from a red rash through to large itchy swellings and welts (hives), and sometimes this can occur a few days after you have started using the product. You can even develop allergies to products you have been using for years, and the only thing you can do is switch to using another product that has different ingredients. Typical chemicals used in cosmetics which cause a reaction include:
· Ethyl alcohol – this is sometimes referred to as Alcohol Denat and is known for causing irritation to sensitive skin.
· Balsam of Peru – this vanilla scent is used in cosmetics, shampoos and other beauty products but can cause contact and inhaled allergic reactions.
· Acetone – commonly used in nail varnish remover this can also cause inhaled and contact allergic reactions
